There are two basic things that you’re going to need to start this business; you’re going to need a website, and you’ll need something to sell.
Make the decision as to what you’re going to sell on your website first. This will help you decide on a name. Are you going to sell actual physical product that you have to order, keep as inventory, and ship? Are you going to stock your site with product that you can have a third party ship to the customer? Or are you going to sell something that has become more and more prevalent on the web these days…information products?
Information products are much easier to sell online because there’s no need for buying, stocking and tracking inventory and there are no hassles with shipping, and if you’re interested in selling information products, they’re not difficult to find.
Regardless of what you decide you’re going to sell, you’re going to need a web name for your business, also called a “domain name”, which is preceded by “www” and followed by “.com” or “.net” or “.ca” or some other suffix. There are many reputable companies who provide domain name registration for a fee. You will also need a company to host your website. If at all possible, try to find a company who will register your domain name, and host your site as well. It is much more convenient to have both tasks under one umbrella, rather than hassling with two separate companies.
If you have no knowledge of building a website, you can hire a web designer, or there are various types of software that can help you do that. Do your research; some of these programs are cheaper than others for a reason. You could also use a company that provides site templates to register your domain and host your website. Site templates are great because they work well for those who have no knowledge of html. They allow you to put your information into a pre-built “picture” page(s). All you have to do is insert your own information, save and upload it.
There are various types of software that you can purchase to help you do a literal million things once your site is up and running, such as increase traffic, and get listed in the search engines.
