Leonardo DiCaprio as Green Heartthrob

One could harp about Leonardo Dicaprio for many things, be it his low-key career moves or off-screen romances with models like Giselle Bundchen. But one thing nobody can fault him for is having a green heart.

Ironically, it’s interesting how someone who once made everybody fear icebergs in Titanic is rallying people to keep them from melting. The Golden Globe Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated actor has long lent his name to his favorite cause, the environment. As a veritable citizen of the world, Leonardo takes to his altruism with as much fervor as to his craft.

Ecology had already been a cause close to Leo’s heart even before climate change became doomsday talk in the new millennium. On the heels of Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio created the eponymous foundation dedicated to rectifying global warming and scouring for renewable energy sources. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has collaborated with relevant organizations like the Natural Resources Defense Council, Global Green USA, National Geographic Kids, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Through the foundation, he produced, wrote and narrated the award-winning feature length documentary The 11th Hour.

Leo himself has been recognized for his green-themed altruism. He received plums like the Martin Litton Environmental Warrior Award and the Green Cross-Global Green USA Award for Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership.

When one thinks about it, there are countless angels in star-studded Los Angeles who have found an outlet for their pecuniary excesses. In contrast, only a few give back to the planet. Leonardo DiCaprio is on top of that heap.

Tree huggers may look forward to his next eco-oriented flick, Eco-Town.
