Nicol David to Continue Supporting British Open Squash Tourney despite Declining Prize Money
Top-ranked women’s squash player Nicol David of Malaysia will still continue hitting squash balls in next week’s British Open despite the fact that the tournament is on a decline especially on the prize money. British Open is the oldest squash tournament thus the prestige is still there but with lesser sponsors, the organizers have no choice but to reduce its prize money to the winners.
The 26-year old player recently got a title of Datuk in her home country. This title is considered the highest title a civilian can get. This was bestowed to her because of her leadership in the sport and at the same time for the honor she brings for the country due to her impressive achievements with her quash racket.
The 87-year old tournament is undoubtedly on a decline because of the global financial crisis. However, David chose not to be outspoken about the issue but simply said that she will continue supporting the tournament.
According to reports, the women’s prize money will be greatly affected with the reduction. About 40 percent of total prize money compared to last year will be reduced which could demoralize even the top-ranked player.
The reason behind this is the absence of a title sponsor of the tournament. I-SPORT group is currently taking over the tournament and is doing its best to revive the prestige of this squash tournament.
Last year, the total cash prize for the women’s event was $53,000. This year, it has been reduced to about $30,000.
Despite this, David said that she wants the tradition to continue.
