People Can Now Access Official Government Data Using New Website
In a drive to make more public sector data available to the public, the government has recently launched a website that would enable people to freely access huge amounts of data collected by the authorities ranging from crime statistics to traffic information.
Mentored by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of web, the project was launched in its beta version in last September. A number of developers have tested and responded on the efficacy of the website with their valuable feedback since then.
The website, data.gov.uk, aims at tapping the unused information collected and stored by the government authorities in their offices and brings it to the public. According to Sir Tim, since enormous amounts of money have already been spent by the government in collecting the data, it should not be allowed to stay unused in someone’s office.
He was supported by another key figure in the development of the website, Professor Nigel Shadbolt of
The data can be used for a variety of purposes including a mechanism for reporting public risks such as potholes on roads, or displays of school locations on the basis of their Ofsted rating. It will also enable people to register and get information about the planning applications in the area through PlanningAlerts applications. It is also expected that the site will grow with additional information as well as newer applications for the use of such information.
